Critical Care: Jesse
Jesse’s eyes were completely sealed shut from an infection
Tiny Jesse was found on the sidewalk in 39 degree temperatures. His eyes were completely sealed shut from an infection, he was dehydrated, starving, and had ear mites. ABC immediately took him to the hospital where he was treated with fluids and antibiotics, and fed prescription food every few hours.
After being hospitalized for 10 days he is finally able to eat on his own and is gaining weight – clearly he has the will to survive! He will complete his recovery in a foster home until he’s ready to be adopted.
Jesse’s veterinary expenses have been considerable so any size contribution will help this precious boy. As always, your donation is tax-deductible. ABC has no paid administrative staff so all the funds go directly to the animal care. Donations via check can be mailed to Animals Benefit Club, 3111 E St John Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85032, please include “Jesse” in the memo.

Critical Care Corner: Tiffany
Tiffany suffered a broken pelvis from a hit & run
Tiny Tiffany was hit by a car and left to die in the middle of the road. A good Samaritan stopped and scooped her up and contacted ABC for help. ABC rushed her to the hospital where she was stabilized and given pain medication. X-rays revealed her pelvis was broken in several places on both sides and would require extensive surgery. Despite her intense pain, Tiffany was very sweet and wagged her tail at all her caregivers.
Tiffany’s medical expenses will be costly, however, she has a fighting chance because Eddie the Yorkie, a past Critical Care rescue, was in a similar situation and made a full recovery! Initially we were attempting to raise $7,000 to help cover her pelvis surgery but unfortunately her post op x-rays also show a break in her tibia, which wasn’t discernible in her initial x-rays and will require a second surgery.
Many thanks to Tiffany Construction and their staff for not only rescuing little Tiffany from the road after being hit, but also for their extremely generous donation towards her medical costs. In case you were wondering why her name is Tiffany, now you know! Also a big thank you to Dr. Brian Petrovsky at Arizona Canine Orthopedics and Sports Medicine for taking great care of her.
Any size contribution will help this sweet girl! As always, your donation is tax-deductible. ABC has no paid administrative staff so all the funds go directly to the animal care. Critical Care Corner: Paco
Paco has an Infected Leg From a Dog Attack
A good Samaritan found Paco injured, bleeding and unable to walk in Hermosillo, Mexico. He was taken to a local animal shelter where they bandaged the fractured leg, but didn’t properly clean or treat his wounds, as we would later determine. Paco languished in the shelter for over five weeks until ABC learned about the situation through a rescue partner. ABC agreed to take him in for evaluation and treatment. The initial consultation showed that his leg was fractured by a dog attack, which then became severely infected. ABC is now trying desperately to save Paco’s leg. However, it requires an advanced surgery and rigorous rehabilitation for it to be a successful outcome.
We are attempting to raise $6,000 to help cover the cost of his surgery and treatment. Any size contribution will make a difference! Please make an online, tax-deductible donation or mail a check to Animals Benefit Club, 3111 E St John Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85032. Include “Paco” in your donation description. All funds beyond our estimate will go towards future Critical Care animals. Thank you!

Critical Care Corner: Gemini
Gemini Rescued After Hit by a Car
UPDATE: This “tri-pawed” had a long recovery time with a wonderful foster family. They spent many sleepless nights by her side as she healed from her injuries, surgeries, and abandonment. We are happy to share that she is a foster “failure” and has officially been adopted by her foster family! Visit our Happy Tails page to see photos of her in her new home.
Gemini was rescued by an ABC volunteer after being hit by a car. We attempted to save her leg through reconstructive surgery, but unfortunately it wasn’t a success and her leg had to be amputated. This sweet Husky girl is still young and we want to give her the best chance at a long and happy life.
We need to raise $4,000 to help cover the costs of Gemini’s surgery and medical care. Any size contribution will make a difference! Make an online, tax-deductible donation today or mail a check to Animals Benefit Club, 3111 E St John Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85032. Please include “Gemini” in your donation description. Critical Care Corner: Noel
Noel Abandoned on a Cold Night
UPDATE: Noel now weighs 5 pounds and looks more like a schnauzer every day. She may be small, but she makes up for it in personality!
Early in the morning of December 21st, Noel was being left in a tiny crate outside a Walmart entrance in 42 degree temperatures. An ABC volunteer intervened and asked what was going on. The owner stated they were leaving her there because they no longer wanted her.
She was lethargic and passing bloody stool. She was rushed to the hospital where she received fluids, antibiotics, and proper food. Barely six weeks old, her blood work showed she hadn’t been receiving proper nutrition for days and was seriously anemic. She weighs approximately 1 pound. She started to eat and drink on her own and is expected to make a full recovery.
It truly is a Christmas miracle that she survived, but she does have some challenges ahead. We need your help to raise $1200 to offset the cost of her hospitalization and treatment. Any size contribution will make a difference for Little Noel!

Critical Care Corner: Hunter
Hunter Hit by a Car
UPDATE: Unfortunately the impact from Hunter’s accident caused irreparable damage to his eye and it was unable to be saved. He’s adjusting very well despite being a one-eyed, three-legged dog. He loves to go for walks and play in the yard! He is not available to adopt at this time.
Hunter was found staggering along side the road after being hit by a car. He was taken to Maricopa County Animal Care & Control (MCACC) where a plea to help him went out to the local animal rescue network. ABC answered that plea and he was immediately taken for evaluation on his injuries. Despite our best efforts, his leg could not be saved and required amputation. He also has glaucoma in his right eye. Once again we are working with Dr. Reed and her team at Eyeshine Veterinary and we’re hopeful they can save his eye.
Hunter is a 3 year old German Shepherd mix. Despite everything this poor boy has been through, he’s the sweetest, most loving dog you’ll ever meet! We expect he’ll be ready to adopt before the end of November. Once he’s been cleared he’ll be listed on our website.
We need your help to raise $6,000 to offset the cost of Hunter’s surgery and medical care. Any size contribution can make a difference! We quickly agreed and hospitalized her for testing and treatment. We’re currently awaiting test results to determine her medical condition.
Despite her situation, she is fighting to get better and continues to be the sweetest girl! Everyone at ABC, along with the doctors, vet techs and emergency staff are rallying behind this amazing girl.

Delilah’s Progress Updates
Update 1/19: Delilah’s test results show she has a severe case of Valley Fever, a fungal infection commonly seen in the desert Southwest. ABC has treated many Valley Fever cases in dogs, but Delilah is the worst case yet. Given the severity of her symptoms, Delilah’s medical team estimates she went undiagnosed for over a year. Treating her will require a minimum of six months of ongoing medical supervision and consistent treatment; we estimate her expenses to be around $5,000.
Update 1/24: Delilah met with a specialist for her ultrasound. The ultrasound showed 1-2 areas that need monitoring, but otherwise our sweet girl was given a good prognosis. The specialist recommended a more aggressive treatment, so over the course of the coming weeks Delilah will receive a series of six intravenous infusions of medication. The good news is, even though she’s still weak, she perks up when her four-legged patient friends pass by.
Update 1/25: Diamondback Drugs, our long-time pharmacy for compounded pet medications, has offered to donate all of Delilah’s medications! We’re very grateful for all of their products that have helped to improve the lives of our rescues over the years. Thank you Diamondback Drugs for helping make a difference for Delilah and many others like her! Click to read their Facebook post
Update 1/27: Sweet Delilah has started intravenous infusion treatments of a very aggressive drug to attack her Valley Fever. She is currently in a 24-hour facility under the careful watch of doctors and vet techs to monitor her blood pressure and lab results. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers as this is a very aggressive treatment protocol, but considering her condition it’s the best option we have at this time. It is, however, very difficult on the patient. We will keep you updated as she has five more treatments over the next two weeks.
Update 2/3: It is with much sadness that we need to let everyone know that sweet Delilah has crossed the rainbow bridge. In spite of hiring the very best veterinary professionals and hospitals she was not strong enough to withstand the aggressive treatments required to save her life. Our hearts are broken. She was loved by so many people who never met her but cared so much. We were with her to her very last breath and take consolation in the fact she knew she was deeply loved. We appreciate all your support, prayers and love throughout this difficult time. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we continue to process this heart breaking loss. We will share another update in the near future.
Thank you!

Critical Care Corner: Cody
Cody Rescued From the Trash
UPDATE: Because of YOUR contribution, Cody is expected to lead a very normal life! Thank you for your support and the wonderful talents of Dr. Zoe Reed and her team at Eyeshine Veterinary! Here are some photos that document Cody’s story, from the time he was rescued to his post-op visit.
An ABC volunteer found Cody left for dead in the trash. He suffers from a birth defect called “cherry eye” in both eyes. His medical issue went unattended so it caused additional complications which will require extensive surgery to repair them.
Cody is a purebred Maltese, only 4 months old and barely weighing 5 pounds, who is the sweetest ball of fluff you’ll meet! We are currently working with Dr. Reed and her team at Eyeshine Veterinary to determine the best course of action for Cody. We need to raise $2,400 to cover his surgery and medical care. Cody is with a foster family and won’t be available to adopt until he’s made a full recovery.

Falkor Needs Prosthesis After Hit-and-Run
A police officer rescued Falkor, a gorgeous German Shepherd, when he was left to die in the street after a hit-and-run in the Southwest Valley of Metro Phoenix. ABC was contacted and Falkor was taken to Phoenix Veterinary Referral and Emergency. Sadly his leg could not be saved and required amputation. Falkor has been placed in a foster home and is doing great.
