Heartbroken to Heartwarming
Heartbroken to heartwarming, ABC gives animals a second chance!
Hello!
My name is Margot and these are my two babies, Theodore (the one who looks like me!) and Camille. My family moved out of their apartment and left me behind. They didn’t know I was ready to give birth to two little ones. I was scared, heartbroken, and hungry. I didn’t know what would happen next. Finally, the manager of the apartment complex found me and asked another tenant to look after me until she could find a place for me to go. The lady who took me in gave me food and water. I was very grateful for their kindness.
And their timing couldn’t have been better because I gave birth to my babies that same day! However, the lady was less than thrilled; she didn’t expect to have puppies in her apartment too and quickly contacted someone to take us all away. I was heartbroken again. Then along came two wonderful volunteers from ABC who brought us to their shelter. They gave me a private space to nurse my babies, and provided me with plenty of good food and fresh water. We quickly warmed up to all our caregivers and have grown to love them so much. My heart is no longer broken!
Abandoned dogs like me wouldn’t have a chance without ABC, along with the many dogs and cats that need special care and medical treatment. ABC is truly a wonderful place for animals like us.
Today is your last chance to make a 2023 tax-deductible donation! Make our holiday wishes come true, support ABC and complete your donation before midnight tonight!
Warmest wishes to you and your family this holiday season!
XO,
Margot, Theodore and Camille
Critical Care: Jesse
Jesse’s eyes were completely sealed shut from an infection
Tiny Jesse was found on the sidewalk in 39 degree temperatures. His eyes were completely sealed shut from an infection, he was dehydrated, starving, and had ear mites. ABC immediately took him to the hospital where he was treated with fluids and antibiotics, and fed prescription food every few hours.
After being hospitalized for 10 days he is finally able to eat on his own and is gaining weight – clearly he has the will to survive! He will complete his recovery in a foster home until he’s ready to be adopted.
Jesse’s veterinary expenses have been considerable so any size contribution will help this precious boy. As always, your donation is tax-deductible. ABC has no paid administrative staff so all the funds go directly to the animal care. Donations via check can be mailed to Animals Benefit Club, 3111 E St John Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85032, please include “Jesse” in the memo.
ABC rescues animals regardless of their medical condition. Many times an animal needs surgery or extended medical care before he or she is ready for adoption. Our Critical Care Corner will keep you updated on these special needs animals.

Buffalo Exchange Tokens for Bags
Animals Benefit Club is a recipient of the Buffalo Exchange Tokens for Bags® program
Animals Benefit Club is happy to announce that we have been selected as a recipient of the Buffalo Exchange Tokens for Bags® program from July through December 2022. You can now donate to ABC just by shopping at Buffalo Exchange Midtown, Phoenix. Instead of a plastic bag, the Tokens for Bags® program offers every customer who makes a purchase one “token” valued at five cents (the cost to produce a bag) to donate to one of several local charities selected by the store. The program has generated over $893,860 for hundreds of local nonprofit organizations since 1994 and has saved over 17.87 million plastic bags from the landfill.
About Buffalo Exchange
A pioneer in resale fashion, Buffalo Exchange is a sustainable business that works to protect the environment by reusing and recycling clothing. Customers buy, sell and trade clothing, giving it a second life and reducing clothing pollution. In addition to being a sustainable business, Buffalo Exchange also runs multiple programs that contribute to the environment and our local communities. From Tokens for Bags® and our Earth Day $1 Day Sale to Coats for Cubs and clothing donations, we believe in making a positive impact on the communities we operate in. Since opening in 1974, this family-operated company has grown to 41 stores in 15 states.
About Tokens for Bags®
Through our Tokens for Bags® program, shoppers are offered a token in place of a bag, which they can donate to one of three local charities. For each token, we donate five cents to that charity. Since its creation in 1994, Buffalo Exchange has raised over $893,860 for thousands of local nonprofit organizations. Every token a customer donates represents a plastic bag that is not added into circulation. Thanks to our customers, we are proud to have kept over 17.87 million plastic bags from polluting the environment.
COMETS Coin Drive Returns!
After a two year hiatus due to the pandemic, we were happy to welcome back the Desert Springs Preparatory sixth grade leadership class, along with their families and teachers Mrs. Berg and Mrs. Pela. The COMETS (Community Outreach Means Everyone Teams for Success) held a school-wide coin drive and raised $1,100 for ABC. Way to go, COMETS!
After the check presentation, every one got to tour a dog building (the dogs barked their loudest “hello”), play with some kitties in the cattery, and share treats with some well mannered dogs. ABC Volunteers were there to talk about the history and mission of ABC and to demonstrate the best way to greet a new dog. Each student received a treat to give to the rescue dogs, we’re not sure who was more excited about it – the kids or the pups!
Thank you COMETS for your continued support of ABC, not only did you help the animals, but you also helped reduce the coin shortage!

Cans For Kitties
Join the Cans For Kitties aluminum can drive!
ABC is collecting and recycling aluminum cans to help offset food and spay/neuter costs for our feral cat community. This is an ongoing fundraiser that allows you to collect cans and drop off at your convenience, it’s also no-contact!
- COLLECT liquid-free, clean, crushed cans – aluminum only!
- BAG into garbage or grocery bags, but please tie securely!
- DROP OFF to the west side of the Activity Center at the double wooden gate, toss your securely tied bags over the fence.
Get your community involved with Cans For Kitties! Share a photo of the cans or bags you’ve collected on social media using the hashtag #cansforkitties. Share the flyer with friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers and invite them to save cans for you.
Betty White Challenge
Fans and animal lovers alike are paying tribute to actress and animal advocate Betty White, who died December 31.
Our very own Hunter was featured on a 12News.com segment showcasing Betty White’s animal advocacy work and highlighting a couple local animal rescues that could use financial support.
Medical intake Post surgery Playing in the yard
Hunter, who was hit by a car in 2018, had to have his leg amputated and an eye removed. He has had to deal with physical trauma, mobility issues, even some behavioral issues, but he has learned to adapt like the trooper he is. And now the vision in his good eye is deteriorating. At this time, Hunter is not available to adopt. Visit our Adopt page to learn about our adoptable dogs (and cats) who are looking for their forever homes.
The #BettyWhiteChallenge has been gaining momentum on social media.
“On Betty White’s 100th birthday, January 17th, everyone should pick a local rescue or animal shelter in your area and donate just $5 in Betty White’s name. Make her 100th birthday the movement she deserves.”
We Snuggled Close
This family is now available to preadopt! Please review our Adoption Process and submit your completed Adoption Questionnaire.

My name is Snowflake. I was living in horrible conditions outside downtown Phoenix with my brothers, Nicholas and Midnight, and my mother Noel. We were so scared. With no place safe to sleep, no food, and near freezing temps, we were unsure if we were going to survive. We tried not to lose hope and snuggled close together to keep each other warm. As the days passed we would hunt for food in nearby trash cans. It was all we had to survive. Many times it made us sick.
Then one day volunteers from ABC arrived and rescued us! They wrapped us in soft blankets and held us close in their arms – we purred for probably the first time ever. They brought us to their shelter and we now have a safe place to live, wonderful food, even cat trees, toys and a litter box. We are so happy and so WARM! Plus, we have as much good food and fresh water as we want and the staff and volunteers are so nice. We found out there are many dogs and cats like us at the shelter. ABC rescues abandoned, homeless animals and rehabilitates them so they can find their forever homes. We also found out that it is run by volunteers and all donations go to animal care and support!
There are so many homeless cats and dogs, it’s truly heartbreaking. I shudder to think what would have happened to us if ABC had not come to our rescue. I hope you can find it in your heart to make a donation and continue to help animals like me. I managed to slip a donation return envelope in the letter for your convenience! Remember, ABC is a 501c3 charitable organization so your donation is one hundred percent tax deductible.
Thank you for listening and have a wonderful Holiday season!
Love,
Snowflake

Look At These Faces
Our summer 2021 fundraising is underway and our letter will be arriving in mailboxes very soon.
No matter the circumstance – abandonment, neglect, abuse, critical illness, or injury – every animal who arrives at Animals Benefit Club is provided with a safe and loving environment to help them heal. ABC rescues all breeds of cats and dogs without discrimination and will provide them with medical care, food, and shelter until they are placed in a forever home. As a true no-kill shelter, these animals will call ABC “home” for as long as needed.
Look at these faces, and read their stories. We know there’s a perfect home for each of them.
Domino, a Black & White Tuxedo, was found locked in a plastic carrier in the hot sun. He now resides in our large community of kitties and has made great progress but still tends to be on the aloof side. He will accept some petting but prefers to follow the Staff around and hang out nearby. In a quiet home he would absolutely flourish, especially if he gets to play with a wand toy.
Beau, a Chihuahua, was rescued from the streets of Phoenix. This senior fellow likes meeting new people, does well with cats, and doesn’t even mind being dressed in some stylish clothes. He enjoys playing ball and snuggling in laps. He has also learned how to cover himself with a blankie, but he sure would love it if you did it for him!
Lacy, an Australian Cattle Dog mix, is still quite young herself, despite having already raised a rambunctious litter of six named after the lovable Peanuts characters. She is a high-energy girl with the sweetest personality and loves to play with dogs and toys. We think she would make a wonderful running companion and would no doubt excel in agility!
Nugget, a White & Orange Tabby, really is the most extraordinary cat. He was found waiting for food in a feral cat community. He was so friendly and outgoing, he walked right up to the caretaker, who then rescued him. Despite the severe, painful inflammation of his mouth and gums, which resulted in the removal of all of his teeth, his sweet personality never wavered, not even while being given pain meds! This calm purring machine has a heart of gold and is instantly everyone’s best friend.
Nala, a German Shepherd mix, arrived in late 2017 after her owner passed away. She was extremely obese and was at high risk for weight-related issues. She made wonderful progress on a special reduced-calorie diet and frequent walks, see before photos on our website. Having lived in a home previously, she is very well-mannered and at-ease in a home. She loves walks, fetch, tug-of-war, and CAR RIDES! Any other time, she’s perfectly happy to hang out and nap. Nala is very intelligent and curious but is terrified of fireworks. She would make a great companion for humans, but is not a fan of other animals.
These are just some of the rescued animals you would be helping to support while they wait for their forever homes.
Please help with a gift of $25, $50, $75 or whatever amount you are able to give. Any size gift helps. As always, 100% of all donations goes directly to animal care and support – ABC has no paid administration.
Make your donation today or mail a check a check to Animals Benefit Club, 3111 E St John Road, Phoenix, AZ 85032. Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Andra Jeffress
Board Chair
