COMETS Coin Drive Returns!
After a two year hiatus due to the pandemic, we were happy to welcome back the Desert Springs Preparatory sixth grade leadership class, along with their families and teachers Mrs. Berg and Mrs. Pela. The COMETS (Community Outreach Means Everyone Teams for Success) held a school-wide coin drive and raised $1,100 for ABC. Way to go, COMETS!
After the check presentation, every one got to tour a dog building (the dogs barked their loudest “hello”), play with some kitties in the cattery, and share treats with some well mannered dogs. ABC Volunteers were there to talk about the history and mission of ABC and to demonstrate the best way to greet a new dog. Each student received a treat to give to the rescue dogs, we’re not sure who was more excited about it – the kids or the pups!
Thank you COMETS for your continued support of ABC, not only did you help the animals, but you also helped reduce the coin shortage!

COMETS Coin Drive Raised $1,400!
Desert Springs Preparatory sixth grade COMETS leadership class once again organized a successful coin drive fundraiser to support ABC. COMETS stands for Community Outreach Means Everyone Teams for Success. Through their team work and dedication they helped raise over $1,400 for our cause, we’d call that a success!
After the check presentation, the class learned about the importance of pet safety, microchipping, and spay/neuter. They got to meet and spend time with some of our adoptable cats & dogs, including wonder dog Hunter, who lost his right eye and leg after being hit by a car. They also learned how a microchip scanner works and got to try it first hand.
Thank you to teachers Mrs. Berg and Mrs. Pela, the COMETS, and their parents, for supporting ABC for a 5th consecutive year!

The kitties soaked up the love! The Doxies loved meeting the kids! Stanley loved all the attention! Scruffy loved every minute!
Nonprofit Helping Nonprofit
Nonprofit helping nonprofit with handmade pet beds!
Over the summer a group of Westminster Village residents, organized by Westminster Village employee & ABC Volunteer Krista R., worked hard to create pet beds. Last month the holidays came a little early for the wonderful animals at ABC. They were very excited about their new beds. A little Chihuahua name Hollywood even tucked himself into bed!
All the cats and dogs here know that ABC is home for as long as it takes for the right adopter to come and swoop them up. ABC is grateful for the love from Westminster Village, Scottsdale’s premier, not-for-profit life care retirement community.
Boys Team Charity Service Day!
Boys Team Charity Service Day at ABC
This past weekend, a group of 14 senior high school boys, along with their parents, came to the shelter for a service day.
They are all members of Boys Team Charity (btc), a volunteer service organization dedicated to son/parent participation in charitable activities. ABC was selected as their Senior Project charity, after an recent adopter saw there was a lot of things they could do to help the facility. So far, they have spent two six-hour service days at the shelter.
We appreciate and thank each of the members of btc North Valley for their help trimming trees, fixing gates and fences, planting trees, cleaning fans, and much more! They will wrap up their project in January with repairs to the parking lot and clean up throughout the facility.

Nielsen Volunteer Day at ABC!
Nielsen Volunteer Day at ABC!
Every year, Nielsen chooses a nonprofit to support for a day. Animals Benefit Club was nominated by one of their employees and we were entered into their pool of nonprofits. We were so excited to hear ABC won the final vote by a landslide!
In mid-June ABC hosted the group of Nielsen volunteers, which turned out to be one of our largest groups, 16 people! Our Animal Caregivers were thrilled to have so many helping hands available to tackle all sorts of tasks.
Here are just some of the projects they assisted with during their time at ABC:
- Yard work, and A LOT of it: trimming trees, tackling weeds, and raking leaves
- Cleaned up the front driveway
- Scrubbed each and every dog Kuranda bed. Each dog received a like-new bed back in their kennel!
- Collected and cleaned all the Nylabones from the yards and kennels and re-distributed. It was like everyone got a new bone!
- Cleaned each and every floor fan
- Folded and distributed all the laundry from the Activity Center to the other buildings. It was a lot of laundry!
- Cleaned counters, microwaves, stovetop
This amazing group went above and beyond to help out and we are very appreciative of their hard work. We’ve even had some people return to attend our Volunteer Orientation and continue as ABC Volunteers!
Thank you Nielsen for volunteering your time for the animals!
Thank You for the Cat Condos!
New Cat Condos for the ABC Catio!
Thank you to Eagle Scout Drew for holding a successful linen drive and for making all these weather proof cat condos! These are AWESOME and will be used in our fully enclosed outdoor “catios”!
COMETS Coin Drive Success!
COMETS Leadership Class Host a Coin Drive for ABC!
Thank you once again to the COMETS at Desert Springs Preparatory! This is their 4th consecutive year to host a coin drive and pizza sale to raise money for Animals Benefit Club. Mrs. Berg and her sixth grade leadership class presented ABC with a check for $1,261 and everyone got to meet Wesley, one of our adoptable dogs!
Thank you to this wonderful group of young adults and their teacher for supporting ABC and the community!
Thank You Boy Scouts!
Boy Scouts Make a Difference for the Animals at ABC
A huge SHOUT OUT to ABC volunteer Jason and Boy Scout Troop 644 for completing his Eagle Scout Service Project last weekend. They filled pot holes in the parking lot and all over the play yards. It was a huge job – 5 tons of dirt that had to be compacted as they went. Not to mention the redecorated outdoor, enclosed “catio” complete with carpeted perches and a ramp! The community cats LOVE the use of the vertical space and they enjoy looking out on the neighborhood. A very special thank you to Jason and to everyone who participated in or contributed to this project!
Gavin’s “Wish to Give”
Gavin Fulfilled his “Wish to Give” to the Rescue Animals
Gavin is only 12 years old and is bravely battling cancer with his bulldog, Gigi, by his side. With the help of Make-A-Wish Arizona Gavin fulfilled his “wish to give” and hosted a pet food & supply drive to help our rescue animals. Thank you Gavin for your giving spirit and to everyone who donated items!
Birthday Gifts for the Animals
Volunteers Gave Birthday Gifts to ABC!
Thank you to these two wonderful young ladies for their support and donations! For a second year in a row, instead of asking for birthday presents for themselves, they asked for donations for the animals at ABC! What an inspiration they are!
If you’d like to celebrate your birthday with gifts for the animals, please get in touch with us for our current donation needs or view our wish list items.
